I spent some time yesterday
thinking about a display case I bought last year. It is a very
attractive Oak display with a mirror back and clear Plexiglas shelves.
I installed it last summer but have not taken the time to fill it yet.
I wanted to come up with a plan to fill it so that it looks real cool.
The shelf / compartment layout is 9 across and 12 down, a total of 108.
Rather than a hodge-podge of models I decided on 3 of each model for a
total of 36 models. The first 5 years of Hot Wheels includes 119
models. I don't like them all so I made a list of my favorites and
there are 36 so they will display perfectly.
If you collect only the 1968 to 1970 and want to display them separately
the remaining models are:
8 - Heavyweights (if you include the Fire Chief and Police Cruiser)
2 - Mongoose and Snake
11 - Race Cars
9 - Spoilers (including 3 Silver Specials Club Cars)
I think four other displays for these models would work well. There
are lots of interesting Mongoose and Snake items to add to those cars.
This wall display has a special
front that "lifts" off, small pegs that angle up hold the front on
This plexiglass case has
adjustable shelves and I added orange track to the bottom. It
needs another track in the space so that all 16 1968 models can be
displayed
Drawer units are handy, this one
is an antique sheet music storage case with a roll-up front

These
shelves are from iKea, you can check them out here: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40068154
Very cheap but nice looking. I bought 3 plus one extra to
take an extra three shelves out and extra hardware. For my
display with the plastic cases at the bottom I had to move the
fixed shelf up about 5 inches and drill new holes.
I am really pleased with how these worked out.
